Foster Care and Adoption-Competent Practice
Presented by: Michelle Robertson, MSW, LGSW 

Workshop Description: This training will explore best practices in working with foster and adopted youth, their families and other professionals. Topics covered include; grief, loss & separation issues, therapeutic approaches, cultural considerations, professional collaboration and the importance of self-care. Participants will discuss the issues that youth and their families experience in relationship to foster care and adoption, how communication and collaboration between professionals can enhance success and the place that culturally fluent practice is best practice for everyone! Research, references, and resources are also included.

Learning Objectives

1.  Explore how separation, grief & loss affect the youth and their providers in the area of foster care and adoption. 
2.  Identify models for attachment work. 
3.  Learn why cultural fluency/competence is best practice. 
4.  Understand the collaboration between professionals holds many keys to success for youth and their providers. 
5.  Demonstrate ability to integrate & apply information into case examples. 
6.  Value self-care for themselves and others in our work with youth, providers and other professionals.

Presenter Information:  Michelle’s professional activities include being a Community Trainer for the Minnesota Department of Human Services Child Welfare Training System and the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (Permanency & Adoption Competency Certificate Program-PACC, Child Welfare Training Academy, Indian Child Welfare Act). Leadership Coach for the Blandin Foundation’s Community and Reservation Leadership Programs (building healthy rural and tribal communities in Minnesota). She trains cross cultural practices for Cultural Fluency Associates and foster care/adoption/kinship for MN ADOPT. Ms. Robertson is a citizen of the White Earth Nation of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Other areas of experience include; youth residential treatment, chemical dependency, domestic abuse, social justice, international and Indigenous issues.
