Workshop Description: This training will briefly discuss basic tenets of Somatic Experiential Play Therapy and incorporate the importance of tracking the physiology in children during play. Principles of neuroscience and tracking for fight, flight, freeze, and collapse will also be discussed. Lecture, power point, experiential learning, and video case examples will be used to enhance learning. Participants will gain an understanding of what children's physiology is communicating during play and ways to respond to and support their nervous systems in the resolution of trauma.

Gain a foundational understanding of somatic experiential play therapy and how to integrate nervous system tracking
- Increase understanding of the autonomic nervous system and how it responds to trauma
- Gain a basic understanding of the power of metaphor and how to appropriately respond to it in play therapy
- Identify a stuck nervous system in children and gain a few resources to help support children through this
- Learn how to invite and facilitate appropriate fight or flight response in children
Presenter Information: Melissa Wetterlund is a Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor. Melissa comes from a systems perspective that utilizes a relational approach to assist growth and change. Melissa’s specialties include marriage and family therapy, play therapy, parent education, divorce, blended families, adoption, trauma, and somatic experiencing.
Melissa has been providing trainings around the country and has a passion for helping develop enthusiastic, confident, and competent clinicians and supervisors who truly understand what motivates their behaviors and the behaviors of others. Her greatest excitement is providing mental health professionals and agencies the full support they need to ensure clients have the best possible therapeutic experience in their journeys towards health.
As an AAMFT and BBHT approved supervisor, Melissa spends a lot of her time mentoring and supervising other therapists. She also loves supporting and equipping other supervisors as an AAMFT supervision mentor. Melissa is a member of both the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Association for Play Therapy.
