From Victim to Survivor to Thriver: Trauma Recovery for Intimate Partner Abuse Victims Presented by Jennifer Parker, MSSW

Workshop Description: This workshop draws on Jennifer’s thirty-five years of therapy experience, reports from survivors, and her book, Coercive Relationships: Find the Answers You Seek. She uses survivor stories, survivor survey responses, and case examples throughout the presentation. Jennifer identifies counter-transference issues that are common and describes best practices for assessment and therapy interventions. This workshop will also provide insights into survivor’s stages of change, frequent survivor issues, and the concept of abuse-instilled fear that complicates recovery. Jennifer includes handouts for use with clients. She will provide opportunities for small groups to work on case examples. Jennifer invites participants to also come prepared to discuss any cases they wish to receive input about, presenting them in an anonymous and respectful way.
Learning Objectives:
- Increase knowledge about what is helpful to intimate partner abuse victim/survivors.
- Identify common issues and how they affect victim/survivor behavior.
- Identify therapeutic strategies and handouts that empower victim/survivors.
Presenter Information: Jennifer Parker has a Master’s degree in Social Work and has practiced for over thirty years with a specialty of intimate partner violence (IPV). Therapy with survivors and workshops for training therapists inform her book, Coercive Relationships: Find the Answers You Seek. Jennifer’s accomplishments include a curriculum for IPV group work, workshops, professional newsletter articles, expert witness testimony, a website blog, and awards from state and local agencies.
