Eliminate the Stigma: What You Need to Know About Black Women’s Mental Health

Description: This workshop will discuss the stigma and historical factors which have prevented Black women from addressing their mental health in a clinical setting. It will also provide tools around how to use cultural humility, intersectionality, and evidence-based therapy to meet the needs of this population and foster their healing. 

Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to... 

  • Identify historical factors that have created stigma for Black women seeking treatment for mental health.
  • Understand the generational trauma that Black women have encountered.
  • Explain how health inequalities affect both the psychological and physical health of Black women, as well as the importance of self-care. 
  • Understand intersectionality when working with Black women in treatment. 
  • Explain how a provider’s cultural humility can support Black women in maintaining treatment. 
  • Examine case studies on evidence-based practices used to treat Black women. 

Presenter Information:

Crystal D. Carter MSW, LCSW is a Milwaukee native. She is currently a Policy Initiatives Administrator-Senior Equity Advisor for the State of Wisconsin Division of Medicaid Services at the Department of Health Services. She is former Associate Clinical Professor/Field Liaison at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare.  She is also the President of Dean’s Clinical Solutions, LLC, which provides workshops, consultation, clinical supervision, and assessments, among other services. 

She brings a vast skill set that includes a variety of academic, professional, and community experience. She is a psychotherapist, who has provided therapy for over 10 years in community agencies such as Milwaukee Public Charter Schools, and hospital settings working with adults and children. Crystal’s specialty is mental health and African Americans with an emphasis on black women. She is currently an independent contractor as a Clinical therapist at Nova Mental Services. Her specialty is working with BIPOC populations and women who deal with race and gender related issues as well as other stressors. She has written several articles on topics such as black girls and sexual abuse and race-based trauma.
